Getting Your CA
First Year - Full Time Students
Before commencing full-time employment, first year students will be enrolled in the Chartered Accountants School of Business ("CASB"). For further information please see www.becomeaca.com or www.calearn.com.
To help you be successful in the CASB program, D+H provides you with an internal module leader for each CASB module. The leader will arrange a training course and marking for the Module. As you work through your modules, your squad-mates will also provide support and assistance. We organize our employees into groups of 4 to 5 employees who sit together to provide morale and technical support to one another. Each squad typically includes a first-year student, second year student, UFE writer and qualified CA so you will always have someone to ask questions.
As a new student, you will participate in a one to two week training course designed to prepare you for your upcoming job responsibilities. In this course, you will learn to complete a Compilation Engagement from beginning to end by completing a case study.
In the fall, you will take courses based on a case study to prepare you for completing a Review and an Audit Engagement.
From February through to the end of April or "T Season", you will be involved in one or more of the following streams including training sessions:
- Personal Income tax preparation
- T4/T5 preparation
- T3 (trusts) preparation
- Various non-resident tax reporting matters
A mentor manager and a mentor partner will be assigned to provide you support related to your work and studies. In addition, constructive feedback will be provided through Engagement and Annual Evaluations.
Second Year - Full Time Students
In your second year, you will continue to receive training to assist you in completing your assignments effectively. The training this year takes a more in depth look at complex issues that arise when completing Review and Audit Engagements. Audit training focuses on completing an audit engagement for Not-for-profit, Private and Public Companies (IFRS).
To help you be successful on the UFE, D+H creates a training team and provides you with an internal UFE leader and a UFE mentor. The leader will arrange an ongoing training course. Your UFE mentor will assist you in preparing a study plan and dealing with stress. The training team will also mark cases for you.
Third Year - Full Time Students
In your third and fourth year, you will join the Weekly Technical Session for qualified CAs. You can become involved in CASB Module and UFE training thereby developing your presentation skills. Your internal training will include courses on more complex technical issues related to audit and accounting.
Upon qualification as a CA, you will develop an individualized training program based on the area of specialization you choose. This plan will include a combination of internal and external course as well as self-directed study.
